1.Attended George Heriot's School,Edinburgh,1900-1905.
Silver medallist in mathematics,physics and chemistry and Dux and gold medallist of the school in 1905.
2.University of Edinburgh,1905-1910.Passed final exams with distinction and graduated MB.ChB with honours.

4.Wrote valuable papers on the effect of TB on the natives in Transkei and Ciskei.Refer to Report of Tuberculosis Survey of the Union of SA.1924.
5.Involved in the establishment and development of Nelspoort Sanitorium. Appointed Medical Superintendent from15.1.1924 to 31.3.1927 and again from 1.4.1930 to 31.7.1933.The main driving force behind the sanitorium was John Garlick,entrepreneur,parliamentarian and city councillor of Cape Town.
On the advisory board at the start was Mr P D Cluver,Ch. of the Cape Municipal Assoc..and later mayor of Stellenbosch and Mr CWT Duminy,Ch of the Cape Div. Council.
Eric Rosenthal wrote the following in a booklet commerating the 50th Anniversary of the sanitorium;
Dr Peter Allan,a trained medical doctor,who qualified in medicine at Edinburgh university medical school in 1910 and who,after gaining his Diploma there in Public Health,had completed his studies in Glasgow in 1912 was appointed as medical superintendant of the Nelspoort Sanitorium.. Dr Allan had also served in the RAMC in WW 1
On November 22,1920,Dr P Allan took up his new duties and on 17 January 1921 he was already on site.
6.In 1921 appted.a Major for reserve officers in the Union Defence Force.In 1936 promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
7.In 1949 he was appted. Chairman of a Commission of Enquiry into the occurence of certain occupational diseases other than Silicosis and Tuberculosis attributable to the nature of and employment in and about the mines.
8.Was also sometime head of the Romsley Hill Sanitorium in Birmingham.
9.The Prince of Wales(later Edward V111 and the Duke of Windsor) visited Nelspoort Sanitorium at the time of it's opening on 24.7.1925.Dr Peter Allan showed them around.The Prince also unveiled a plaque to John Garlick.
In April 1947 George V1 was to visit the sanitorium during the Royal visit to South Africa of that year.
10.Promoted to Secretary for Public Health in succession to Sir William Thornton in 1934.
