Posted 24 May , 2014 Hi Andy No - I had no idea there was a small biography. The piece I have is an extract that was published in The Great War series and perhaps it was originally in the biography you mention. It starts: " How little people at home, hard as they worked, realized what the war meant to the men on the battlefields." It then goes on to describe some of the horrors he encountered and makes a reference to his "best friend being blown to pieces" and the terrible conditions on the Somme. I am guessing that perhaps the best friend he is referring to is Captain Wallington. It is one of the most powerful pieces I have ever read about WW1 and it affected me deeply. According to what I know from the family, the best friend who was 'blown to pieces' was indeed Wallington, and afterwards Cockburn went to call on the Wallington home in Chelsea to deliver the terrible news, where he first met Marjorie, Geoffrey's sister, then in her late teens. He began to court her, and they married in 1926.
