  General Notes:

Famous South African artist.
Her father was a wheat farmer in the Malmesbury district.
Maggie was born on the family farm,Bloublommetjieskloof, Klipheuvel.
She attended Bloemhof school in Stellenbosch from 1897 to 1901.
As a 17 year old she studied under Prof.Edward Roworth who came to SA in 1902.He later was head of the SA National Museum of Arts. and the Michaelis Arts School in CT.
Was a member of the SA Society of Artists.
In 1912 met the Dutch Consul to SA who became a close friend and strongly influenced her work in future.
Left for Europe in October 1913 and worked in the UK and Holland.Influenced by the Hague School of Anton Mauve.
Studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1914 to 1919.
Travelled and worked in Italy,Germany and Austria.
Returned to SA in 1921 and lived on the family farm,OOrtmanspos in the Klipheuwel District.On the journey back met Irma Stern.
Lived and worked in Berlin and Dresden from 1922 to 1924.
In August visited the Baltic Sea with Irma Stern (1894-1966).
In 1924 held a number of exhibitions in SA.
Over next 10years elected to the SA Academy for Science and Art.Toured the whole country.
The SA Civil Service purchased a number of her works to hang in Embassy's around the world.
Moved to the Strand in 1944 where she painted portraits,flowers and landscapes.
In subsequent 25 years achieved many awards and widespread recognition.
Died at her home in the Strand in May 1973 at the age of 87.
