Attended Dumpton Prep and Canford schools in Winborne,Dorset.
Joined the Royal Navy from 1962 to 1993.Was a pilot in the Royal Fleet air arm.
Visited Cape Town on the aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark in February 1970.At this time his cousin,Alan Chetwynd Gillett was at university in Stellenbosch and had just announced his engagement to Jeanne Allan,also of Stellenbosch.
After the Bosnian conflict was a militiary attache in Zagreb,Croatia for about 6 years.
In 2008 retired to Scotland.
